AA DEGREE
Students completing an AA degree in English develop core
competencies in several areas including communication, critical
thinking, global awareness, information competency, and per-
sonal responsibility. This is achieved through the study of texts
and the enhancement of reading, writing, and research skills.
Students must complete all required courses for a minimum of
18 units. Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this
program, students will be able to apply literary and rhetorical
concepts in order to critically read, write, think, and research.
REQUIRED COURSES: ENGL 105** and 106** or ENGL 109**
and 110**.
A minimum of twelve units from the following courses:
ENGL 101, 102, 103, 104, 105**, 106**, 109**, 110**, 112, 117,
122, 123, 125, 127, 128.
**These courses may not be used in more than one area.
ENGLISH: CREATIVE WRITING
AA DEGREE
The English Creative Writing AA degree is designed to pro-
vide students with a solid foundation of creative writing skills.
Students will understand genre, literary concepts, and socio-
cultural influences on literature by critically reading novels,
short stories, poetry, and creative nonfiction, and by writing
their own original creative works. Coursework prepares stu-
dents to enter programs in creative writing at baccalaureate
institutions. The program emphasizes critical thinking, literary
analysis, research, and writing skills. Students must complete all
required courses for a minimum of 18 units. Program Learning
Outcomes: Upon completion of the program students will be
able to: analyze and critically read a variety of texts and various may enter the job market in fields that require knowledge
forms of media from contemporary literature and the literary
canon; develop analytical and creative writing that demonstrates
an understanding of literary concepts, genre, and ethical use of
sources; produce work that is organized and written in a style
suited for its purpose and audience.
REQUIRED COURSES: ENGL 102, ENGL 104.

FIRE TECHNOLOGY
AS DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE
This degree or certificate is offered for students interested
in preparing for careers in fire prevention and fire fighting.
The courses also provide in-service and upgrade instruction
for fire fighting personnel. Students will demonstrate the
skills required in the field of fire technology. These skills
include: fire prevention techniques, behavior of fire, fire-
fighting tactics and strategy, and the equipment used in
fire protection. Other topics may include: fire investigation,
hazardous materials, building construction, and crisis inter-
vention. Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion
of this program, students will discuss the skills required
for fire prevention techniques; discuss the aspects of fire
behavior; discuss the skills required for fire-fighting tactics
and strategy; and discuss the skills required for the use of
equipment used in fire protection.
REQUIRED COURSES: FIRE 101, 102, 103, 104, 105.
A minimum of twelve units from the following courses:
FIRE 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119,
151; ADMJ 117.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES
AA DEGREE
The AA Degree in Foreign Languages provides academic
preparation in two foreign languages. Via this preparation,
students also learn to think globally and critically by analyz-
ing manifestations of culture. Students are prepared to trans-
fer to baccalaureate degree programs in Linguistics or another
language related major. This AA Degree also meets the needs
of those who wish to gain aptitudes in foreign languages or
of a foreign language. Students must complete all required
courses for a minimum of 18-20 units. Program Learning
Outcomes: Upon completion of this program, students will
demonstrate increased reading and listening comprehension
of the target languages; utilize oral and written communica-
tive skills to produce the target languages; and demonstrate
increased knowledge of the target languages’ cultures.
REQUIRED COURSES: Select 2 courses from one language ten
(10) units and 2 or more courses from a different language
(8-10) units.
