DISTANCE EDUCATION
Glendale Community College offers a variety of Distance
Education courses to meet your needs including Online
courses and Hybrid courses. Distance Education courses shall
utilize features of the Learning Management System (LMS),
Canvas, such as Course Documents, Discussion Boards, Virtual
Classrooms, Groups, Assignments, External Links, Digital Drop
Boxes and Grade Books, Asynchronous and/or Synchronous*
learning, etc. Internet and other technologies are used in
learning exercises every week to ensure regular and effective
contact between instructor and student and between student
and student. Distance Education courses are equivalent to an
in-person course. Courses are taught by the same qualified
instructors and follow the same curriculum and standards
as an in-person based course. Distance Education courses
provide flexibility in scheduling and are especially helpful
for self-directed learners. It is recommended that students be
comfortable with computers, particularly the Internet, before
taking an online or hybrid course. Make sure to read the course
Ticket Note before choosing to enroll. *Synchronous refers to
a learning environment in which everyone takes part at the
same time. Asynchronous refers to a learning environment in
which everyone does not take part at the same time.

Distance Education offers three types of courses:
Online Courses
An Online course is offered fully online. Students cannot be
required to meet face-to-face for office hours, orientations,
homework, exams, distribution of resource materials, or any
other course component. All course instructions, materials,
assignments, and discussions are posted and completed
online through Canvas.
Hybrid Courses
A Hybrid course is offered partly online with online content
and/or activities and partly face-to-face with in-person
meetings. The instructor will give an in-person orientation
and in-class exams as stated in his/her syllabus.
Proctored Online Courses (POC): Assignments and
examinations in a Proctored Online Course will be submitted
in an asynchronous manner, but students will be required to
take tests at a proctoring facility. Your instructor will provide Any portion of a course provided through distance education
proctoring accommodations at GCC. Off-site proctoring
services could be available at the discretion of the instructor.
Once enrolled in a Distance Education course, students must
retrieve and read the Welcome Letter emailed to their GCC
student email account 2-5 days prior to the beginning of
the term. This Welcome Letter will explain the policies and
procedures of the course and how to complete the Check-In
Assignment by Thursday night of a 4-8 week course or by
Sunday night of a 10-16 week course to establish attendance
and not be dropped.

A Welcome Letter:
• Helps students unfamiliar with the distance education
environment understand course expectations,
• Tells students how and where to login,
• Lets students know where to go for technical help and
support,
• Establishes rapport and promotes regular and effective
contact with students early on,
• Assigns a Check-In Assignment. Faculty will design a course
Check-In Assignment (see description below). The Check-
In Assignment will be administered during Week 1.
Check-In Assignment
The course Check-In Assignment is a mandatory requirement
for all distance education courses. If a student does not
complete the course Check-In Assignment by Thursday night
of a 4-8 week course or by Sunday night of a 10-16 week
course to establish attendance, the instructor may drop
the student. Directions on completing the course Check-In
Assignment will be in the Welcome Letter sent via GCC email
by the instructor 2-5 days before the term begins (see above).
Students are responsible to retrieve and read the Welcome
Letter sent to their GCC email before the term begins.
Student Authenticity
Effective Regular Authentic Contact establishing and
maintaining regular effective contact is an important aspect
of delivering an online and hybrid course. It is not only a Title
5 requirement, but is also a practice that encourages and
facilitates student-centered instruction and increases student-
learning outcomes. Therefore, Distance Education courses are
NOT offered in a self-paced format.
Distance Education includes regular effective contact between
instructor and students, and between students and students.
Effective regular and authentic contact in the distance
education classroom takes place in four ways every week

Attendance & Participation Policy
All distance education courses currently follow the GCC
Attendance and Drop Policy.
