The Alternate Media Center is dedicated to ensuring that students have materials they need in a format they can use. The Center provides alternate media for students with verified disabilities for required textbooks, course materials, class handouts, exams, and other print materials. The center has specialized equipment to scan books and documents, software to convert scanned images to text, software for the conversion of text to Braille or to audio files, and equipment to emboss Braille and create tactile images.

The following is a message to Instructors from Scott Ziegler, Alternate Media Specialist.

In order to effectively provide equal access for disabled students, it is very important that course instructors and I develop a good working relationship early in the semester. When you find out that you will have a disabled student in your class, please contact me as early as possible so we can develop a strategy. Converting documents into alternate format takes time, so it is essential that we make arrangements for me to have, for example, class handout and tests 2-3 days prior to when the student will need them. Clear communication between me, the instructor, High Tech Center staff, and the student ensures that our disabled students have the same opportunity to succeed as all other students. I look forward to working with you!”
