How Can You be Assured that an Accommodation is Appropriate?

Colleges have the right to maintain academic standards, integrity, and freedom to determine the fundamental requirements of their individual courses and programs.

Examine each course you teach and decide on the essential content and procedures. 

Ask yourself questions such as these:

• What is the purpose of the course?

• What are the skills or competencies needed in the field after graduation?

• What are the student learning outcomes?

• What would a student need to do/know to demonstrate mastery of the course?

• What methods of instruction, assessment, and what student activities are absolutely necessary?

• Which could be modified to accommodate a student’s particular learning needs and still result in the same level of mastery?

• What are acceptable levels of performance?

Any of your program requirements that are not considered fundamental could then be considered for reasonable accommodation to otherwise qualified students on a case-by-case basis.

Accommodations should make the academic environment manageable without fundamentally altering the curriculum.
