Laboratory Accommodations for Blind Students

In labs, these are some accommodations that other community colleges and universities have found useful.

  • First, all of the previous classroom accommodations can also be applied to a math or science lab.

  • Adaptive lab equipment is available;  talking thermometers, tactile timers, talking calculators and light probes. If the student has any of these, allow them to be used.

  • Lab equipment can be modified by the use of glue guns, Dymo labels, and fabric paint.  For example, glue guns can mark glassware, triple beam balance scales and other equipment at specific measurements.

  • Styrofoam and toothpicks or molecular kits can help explain atoms, molecules, solar systems, etc.

  • 3-D triangles or spheres can be used to describe geometric shapes.
