Welcome to Poorna Pal's Pages at the Glendale Community College

Ocean 115: Physical Oceanography

This 3-unit physical science lecture course examines the physical, chemical and geological aspects of oceans and the oceanic environment. The companion laboratory course is: Ocean-116 (Laboratory Exercises in Physical Oceanography). Also try Biol-125 (Marine Biology) and Biol-126 (Marine Biology Lab.) in order to round up your Marine Sciences learning at the Glendale College. For students taking Ocean-115 and Ocean-116 to complete their Physical Science GE requirements, it may be a good idea to satisfy their GE requirement in Life Sciences by taking either Biol-125 (Marine Biology) or Biol-132 (Introduction to Marine Sciences).

Student Learning Outcomes:   Learning about oceanography, perhaps the most visual of all physical sciences, will help enhance your ability to (a) demonstrate the understanding of physiography and formation of the ocean basins that make the Earth a unique planet; (b) discuss the ocean as a major influence on weather and climate; and (c) evaluate the factors that affect our habitat. This should greatly help sharpen your skills in critical reasoning and articulation by applying the scientific process of continually matching the empirical observations and theoretical constructs in order to understand the forces that shape our natural environment.

bullet The Threat of Abrupt Climate Change Anthropogenic global warming is an entirely predictable occurrence. How this warming affects the climate is not so clear. Unlike many human systems the climate does not react uniformly, significant state changes are also possible (more like a switch than a gradient)...how likely are these changes and how have they occurred in the past?

At the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Ray Berkelmans and his team of research scientists dedicate their knowledge and skills to what has become a crucial problem in the past decade: increasing ocean temperatures have caused many corals to bleach and die in 1992, 1998 and 2002 so what will the future bring? Will corals be able to survive?
