What is a processing deficit?

When we perform a learning disability assessment, we administer standardized tests that measure the student’s cognitive abilities in areas such as these:

Correctly process what is heard

Hold information in working memory long enough to perform mental tasks

Quickly process and respond to visual data

Retrieve information from long-term memory that was learned through words

Perform multi-step problem solving on novel tasks without the use of paper and pencil

We compare the scores on these various mental tasks.  If one or more scores is significantly lower than the others, we determine this to be the processing deficit.
