Description of Faculty Reserve:
If you would like your textbook or course materials available to your students, you may place the materials on Faculty Reserve for the semester during which your class is taught. Items placed on Reserve are available to be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Students may request items by Course Name and Number, Instructor's Name, and Title of the item. Students must present a valid GCC ID to use reserve materials. Materials are checked out for the period of time that has been determined by the instructor.
Check out periods are:
- 2 hour in-library use
- overnight
- 3-day
- 1 week
Almost anything you would like your students to read can be placed on Reserve. The Reserve Collection includes books- library books as well as instructors' personal copies, photocopies of articles (within the current copyright guidelines), copies of past tests, answer keys, and sample student papers. Some instructors have put videotapes, audiotapes and CD- ROMS on Reserve for their students to check out of the library and to use at home. The library has no facilities in-house to use these multi-media items.
How to Place Materials on Reserve:
Instructors may place either library owned materials or personal copies of instructional materials on Reserve for a given class. All materials, including personal copies will have labels, barcodes, information slips and card pockets attached to them. The circulation staff must have at least 24 hours (not including weekends) for preparation of materials for Reserve. Please allow 48 hours before assigning materials to students.
Placing a book on Reserve:
If you would like to place a book on Reserve, we need your cooperation in the following ways:
- Check the library catalog to see if the book is in the library collection. If so, bring the book to the Circulation Desk and completely fill out the "Reserve Form" for each separate title.
- If the book is not in the library, we can place your personal copy or copies on Reserve. In order to place personal copies of books on Reserve, bring them to the Circulation Desk and fill out the "Reserve Form". Your personal copy, or copies, will be returned to you when removed from Reserve status.
Note that the library cannot be held responsible for damaged, overdue, lost or stolen items that have been placed on Reserve.
Placing an article on Reserve:
If you would like to place an article on Reserve, we need your cooperation in the following ways:
- You may place chapters of books and/or articles from newspapers and magazines on reserve. The library will monitor the length of materials to ensure that the materials being placed on Reserve do not constitute a major portion of the original work.
- The library can place photocopied materials on Reserve for one semester only without copyright permission. At the end of the semester, the material will be removed from Reserve unless copyright permission is received.
- The instructor placing materials on Reserve is responsible for obtaining copyright permission.
- A maximum of five copies of any one item may be placed on Reserve.
- Every copy placed on Reserve must indicate full
bibliographic information for the original source of the copy
This means:
- Book: Author, title, edition, publisher, place of publication, year and page number(s)
- Periodical: Author, title of article, name of periodical, date of issue and page number(s)
- Newspaper: Author, title of article, name of newspaper, date of issue, section and page numbers
6. Please use the services of the Duplicating Department for your photocopying needs. The library cannot make copies of materials for Reserve
Thank you for assisting the library in complying with the copyright laws. Once we receive your items we will process them and the "notice of copyright" stamp will be placed on the first page of each copy placed on Reserve.
Communicating with Your Students:
- Do not assume that any materials are on Reserve unless YOU placed them on Reserve this semester. If in doubt, call the Circulation Desk, ext. 5586, to verify their status before telling students that the items are on Reserve.
- Give students the correct title, author and, for library owned material, the call number. If possible include this information on a handout or your syllabus so as to limit confusion.
- Please inform students that they must bring their GCC Student ID with them to the Library in order to use Reserve items.
