ART 198 - HISTORY OF WORLD CERAMICS

This albarello show another regional variation of painting styles used. This example is from Venezia (Venice) and dates to approximately 1580 CE. It belongs to a type of albarello painted with heads of men and women that are encircled by stylized flowers, and scrolled panels. The heads are usually painted against a dark blue background. This particular young man sports a 'berreta a tozzo,' a tall, soft hat that was fashionable in Venice around 1580, and gives us a glimpse into the clothing styles of the period.

This jar held 'Mostardo Fina,' a Venetian delicacy made of pureed quince, pears, or apples, cooked in a white wine, with chopped, candied fruit, sugar, mustard, and salt, cooked until thick.
