ART 198 - HISTORY OF WORLD CERAMICS
Nonomura Ninsei was a Kyoto potter of exceptional skill at the wheel, and in the application of overglaze enamel. His most celebrated works are chatsubo (tea jars). No single potter has a greater influence on later Japanese pottery manufacture. This large tea jar, with a design of poppies in full bloom, follows the style of 'native' painting, and recalls the style of lacquerware painting of the time. Ninsei's name is impressed in a large character at the base. The jar was extensively damaged in an earthquake and skillfully restored. It is registered as an important cultural property, and considered his finest work. |
