ART 198 - HISTORY OF WORLD CERAMICS
Civilization in Egypt is inevitably intertwined with the Nile River, source of water, seasonal flooding, fertile farmlands, and rich, smooth clay for the potter. The Naqada II culture of Predynastic Egypt is first seen approximately 4000 BCE near contemporary Luxor, and from there, influences most of Northern Egypt. These two vessels are representative examples and show high technical skill in forming by coils and decorating. The one on the left has a pattern of spirals, and the one on the right has a long boat, typical of the Nile, with many oarsmen. The handles at the necks of these vessels, with holes that would allow a rope to pass through show that these pots were probably used to transport water.
