ART 198 - HISTORY OF WORLD CERAMICS
The distinctive blue celadon on the Koryo Dynasty can also be seen in this beautiful wine cup with stand, Thrown and carved in porcelain the blue celadon is translucent and buttery as it easily shows the carved design underneath. Thrown in several sections, the cup removes for drinking. The cup is carved in the form of the lotus flower, and this is most often a symbol of the Buddha. The unique blue green quality of Korean celadons seems to derive from the practice of mixing porcelain stone rather than body clay with wood ash to form the glaze. A glaze of such composition is unusually low in titanium, low in iron , and high in calcium - an ideal mixture for the development of this color. |
